May 23, 2015 – Actually, I’ve already bought it twice this month, though it seems wrong, and it’s not nearly as good as local late summer corn.
Growing up, produce was a lot more limited in scope. We didn’t have strawberries in January, no cherries in February, no blueberries in March.
At least not unless they were frozen or canned.
I am still skeptical of tomatoes in January, they have little flavour compared to the sweet summer fruits. Ditto for strawberries and other berries.
Without the natural summer sun, they just don’t have the taste of summer.
To me, the best corn came from DeMille’s in Salmon Arm. I would bring dozens of cobs back home with me, both for myself and for friends. It was so sweet I could happily make a dinner of nothing else. And the best corn was in late summer – late August/early September.
So when I see corn in the markets this early, I eye it suspiciously…but I always seem to buy a couple of cobs…just to see if it has any flavour.
It’s hit and miss. Sometimes it’s actually not too bad.
Or maybe it’s just making me salivate for the taste I know will come in a few months.
That real, sweet, crisp, local corn.
And now that I have unearthed my Grandmother’s corn pot from the things I gathered when I cleaned out Mom’s house, I bet that summer corn will taste even better.
