Humpty Dumpty (343/365/2023)

by The Philosophical Fish

We are all a little bit damaged but, of the most part we still limp along and figure out how to patch ourselves up and keep on keeping on.

I was baking today and used a lot of eggs….I found a secondary use for one 🙃

I also ran out of sugar and sucked in my breath when I realized that I didn’t have a backup back in the pantry….because there has been a strike for the past 10+ weeks at the Roger’s sugar refinery. For weeks the shelves at the grocery stores have been empty of bags of sugar. I registered it over the past weeks, but didn’t really think much of it, until I ran out of sugar halfway through baking five loaves and making a small batch of jam.

I went to four grocery stores and a bulk food store and found no white sugar. Artificial sweeteners won’t work for the current purpose, but I did find a little bit of organic cane sugar at Bulk Barn. Enough to finish up what I’d started in the afternoon.

But I still have more to do.

I thought about running to Costco when they open int he morning, but Costco on a Sunday morning ….yuck. I looked at the clock, looked at the bridge traffic, and figured I could make it to the downtown Costco before they closed at 7pm. I also was pretty certain that Costco would be practically empty at 6:30pm. The bridge was quiet. Georgia Street was quiet.

But Nelson, that damned stretch took me forever. One block at a time, sometimes taking two light changes to clear a block.

The closer I got to the Cambie Street Bridge the busier it felt.

When I turned on to Expo Boulevard I could see a police cars lights flashing ahead, but past where I needed to turn between Roger’s Stadium and the hotel. Once I make that turn it’s a half a block straight into he underground parking beneath Costco.

Except the traffic was weirdly heavy.

Until I looked around and saw lots of people walking towards the stadium…..in Canucks jerseys.

Dammit! There’s a hockey game tonight!! And I chose to go to the Costco that is attached to the Stadium.

Poor planning!

On the upside, Costco was super empty and it only took me 15 minutes to pick up cucumbers, tomatoes, some mixed nuts, a big bag of ripple chips, some slivered almonds, a bag of chocolate chips, 2 lbs of butter, and 20kg of sugar.

I probably buy two 5lb bags of sugar a year at the most….I just bought 45lbs, because….Costco.

Oh well, set for sugar for probably 5 years now.

I'd love to hear from you :)
