The Things of Spring

by The Philosophical Fish

I’m going to start off with an apology for my friends who do not live in places that winter has vacated already.

Kirk was travelling in Chicago last week and, with the recent uptick in the COVID-19 cases, the BC government has asked that all residents returning from out of the country self-isolate for two weeks.

I had already booked these next two and a half weeks off to use up some unused vacation time before the start of the next fiscal year. I didn’t plan on going anywhere, I intended to use the time to catch up on my marking, of which I currently have a large backlog.

So it’s not a hardship to be at home, I just didn’t expect to have company.

We were a little concerned his employer might not be supportive of a voluntary self-isolation but apparently there have been a few people in the office with the flu while he was away so they are sensitized to sickness and only too happy to let him telework for a couple of weeks.

Normally we would be going to Tai Chi this morning, probably doing some errands, maybe some grocery shopping, some pool at the pub….

However, I was off yesterday and Kirk was scheduled to land at 1pm…and as soon as we were together pretty much any outside contact is precluded for the next two weeks; it’s the responsible thing to do.

So I took the opportunity yesterday morning to do some last minute produce shopping at the local market, pick up a case of wine (very important!), and do a few other random errands before picking him up and both of us isolating for the next two weeks.

Luckily, we live in Vancouver and the weather is sunny, at least for the next few days. The garden is starting to show signs of new growth and it’s desperately in need of some attention.

I’m also betting that the house will be spotlessly clean by the end of two weeks as we both search for things to occupy us when we aren’t working.

In the meantime, here is my flowering quince, one of my favourite plants in the garden, about to burst forward with its almost fluorescent coral blooms.

Spring is definitely here!
