Day 253 – The Loki Monster

September 9, 2016 – Loki, using the force on me….hoping for dinner soon….

Food is ever present in his mind….

He’s a pretty photogenic little monster, isn’t he?

I’m grateful he’s still with us, a year ago we thought he had cancer. Thousands of dollars and a few months later they hadn’t found the cancer they suspected and the tests were all negative, but his red blood cell counts were crashing and he was losing weight and had become lethargic. So on to steroids he went.

It was like a miracle drug for him. Within days he was back on food and ravenous (side effect of steroids) and he gained weight, and became active and interactive again.

Now the issue is trying to keep his weight under control so that he doesn’t develop diabetes. So his food is rationed (that goes over well) and he has to chase each kibble across the room, down the stairs, wherever we throw it. And he’s a good little chaser!

We still don’t know what’s up with him, but he’s doing well, though still on a daily high dose of steroids. We keep hoping we will get a series of consistent blood results back so we can start to taper the dose down, but we aren’t quite there yet. He’s doing great, but the steroids bring their own risks.

In the meantime, we love both of the furry fiends and are thankful for their presence.
