July 4, 2016 – The life of an indoor cat, it’s not too bad 😉 If there is a speck of sunshine to be found, Loki and/or Milo will be settled into it.
It’s been a year now since we were told that Loki had leukemia, but they never found it after several thousand dollars worth of tests. And, in fact, the flow cytometry gave results completely to the contrary. But the fact remained that his red cell population was crashing and his lymphocytes were sky high, with no obvious reason, and he was lethargic and losing muscle.
He’s now been on steroids for 6 months and in that time his appetite has returned (with gusto!), his weight has been put (mostly ) back on, he is active and energetic again, and he has returned to being the interactive monster we knew. However, we are now carefully monitoring his food intake so we don’t end up with a diabetic cat on top of the as yet unsolved mystery of exactly “WHY” everything went to hell in a handbasket for him last year.
The “diet” part of that does not go over so well and we have had to get rather sneaky to ensure he doesn’t eat all of Milo’s food, since he was starting to lose weight as Loki gained his back.
His blood work has been good the last two tests and we are hoping that the next one, in a month, will be equally stable so we can start to pull back on the medication. Steroids work miracles, but they are hard on organs and come with their own issues.
The specialist still thinks there may be a lymphoma hiding somewhere and that it’s been responsive to the steroids, but there is no certainty.
And so we continue on and love him for all he is and hope he will be with us a long time yet.
