Low Tech (249/365)

September 6, 2015 – I remember when I was growing up that we rarely used the dryer unless it was winter or raining out. The laundry was hung from the back porch on the clothesline that extended high out over the backyard to one of the trees near the back fence. My Grandma had one of those square things on a single pole that was out back of the orchard house (I used to get my kicks out of spinning that thing). And Granny had a line that went from the back steps off the laundry/freezer room on the farmhouse to, I think, a tall pole somewhere out back. I don’t remember any big trees close to that house.

Me?

In the condo, I would hang things that couldn’t go in the dryer on hangers over the shower curtain rod. And on more than one occasion that came crashing down into the tub, so heavier sweaters ended up being tossed over the back of a chair to dry. Less than satisfying and never could I get that fresh outdoor sunshiny smell that comes with drying one’s clothes outside.

But now, in the new home, I have a collapsing clothes drying rack that can be put out in the sunshine in the yard when it’s nice, or set up in the back of the pantry room when it’s not. No more crashing shower rods 🙂

Just a Sunday random object kinda day, but it seems that I can drag some random memory out of just about any object 😉

My great niece decided she wanted to hang out with her great uncle for a bit in Denmark. We investigated clothespins.

Investigated? Which one of you was unfamiliar?

Well, she’s a year and a half, so likely me.

That’s what I thought.

I initially grumbled about the lack of dryers in Thailand, but 18 months of hanging my laundry was a good lesson in not procrastinating (on the rack by 9am meant it was dry by 5 esp in rainy season), and in appreciating and enjoying the smell and feel of clothes dried outside 🙂
