March 27, 2015 – It’s funny, but when we started looking for a new home I was very clear in not wanting much of a yard. I think I said something like “…not much more than a postage stamp sized yard…” But we ended up with much more than that, and it was overwhelming at first.
Since then however, I have realized just how much I really do like scratching around in the dirt, that I would have missed having the garden space we had at the condo, and then I also realized that I can grow a little bit of food. So I have come to appreciate the space a little more than I originally did.
Today I put a few more lettuces and some spinach in the ground and brought home some hardware so Kirk can build me a raised planter so I can do some carrots, beets, and radishes too!
It’s going to take a long, long, time to get this yard into something that resembles my vision, and it’s going to take a great deal of work.
But I think we are up for it, and the end result will be worth the efforts because sitting outside in a yard under the trees beats our old balcony 🙂
Incidentally, this is a really good way to start seedlings too, just plant the entire thing in the ground and the shell will compost and provide minerals for the roots as the plant grows.
