March 26, 2015 – When it’s silver of course!
I always thought it was amusing that I played in the brass section….but my instrument was made of silver. I did love it, and it’s one of those things I simply haven’t been able to let go of, I don’t think I ever will. I briefly loaned it to my nephew when he thought he might take it up, but he switched instruments and I’d put in a caveat that if and when he stopped, it was to come back to me.
Eventually it came home.
I haven’t played in almost 30 years, and even after finding it stashed away in the storage locker we are trying to clear out and divest ourselves of…it still feels right in my hands.
Through elementary, Junior high, and Senior high, I sang in the choir, and I was in both concert and jazz band, and I also played in a quartet for a bit too. Music, and the arts in general, has always been important in my life and having played for a period provides a greater appreciation for a really great piece of music.
Those years were great also for the friendships that were forged. When you are a part of something collective, like a band, you spend a lot of time together. You put in time before regular classes, you practice, and you travel together.
Hardly a “girlie” instrument, in Senior high it was me, Brian, Mike, Bill, and Gwyneth. That was the trumpet section. I think I always figured if I was going to play an instrument…I wanted to be up high and HEARD!
When I pull out this old trumpet, it brings back such warm memories.
And I’m happy to say that some of those friendships that were forged are still in place all these years later.

Any of my band buddies out there, do you still have your instrument?
I traded my trumpet for an acoustic guitar with great aspirations to learn another instrument, then…the guitar turned into an amazing tyee reel, now I am reeless ang more importantly trumpetless. Started in grade 5 and played lead all through high school and stage band. so I also can start sentences with…one time in band camp.
I keep seeing trumpets in pawn shops and think, hmmm should I?
I played 1st and 2nd trumpet in stage band and Jazz band from grade 5 through to graduation… I sold my trumpet before moving to Vancouver in 1995 and got a new one for x-mas in 2003. I still pick it up from time to time.
Very cool!
You make a post and learn things you didn’t know about people you do!
I started in grade 4 (they let me in a year early) and played through to graduation as well, also played both 1st and 2nd.
I miss my saxophone…
Grade 12 band student of the year…. Likely because I had a van we could use to transport everything.

We can play duets sometime!
Oh Elizabeth, I don’t think my 30 year-out-of-practice blasts would be in any way a pleasant addition to the beautiful sounds that come out of your harp 😉 I couldn’t do you that injustice.

Wasn’t allowed to take band. It still stings.
Nope…I finally sold my clarinet to the store where we rented Kira’s trombone. She played in concert band and in the jazz band right up until graduation. She hasn’t played since.

I also played trumpet (as well as a trombone, flute and piano) from 3rd grade into college but haven’t touched either since. Two of my sons played trumpet in elementary school so it’s still in the house though the flute was stolen. Now trying to learn guitar. The connection from brain to fingers don’t work as well as they used to…
Trumpet, and trombone, and flute, and piano…and now guitar. Impressive. I plinked at my Granny’s piano, and about the only other instrument I played with any mediocrity (other than my vocal chords) was the recorder that we all started out on in elementary school. 😉
