I don't believe it!! (84/365)

March 25, 2015 – Wall-E is spinning quite the yarn to the young gaffer!

It’s funny what you find when you are doing some spring cleaning….and it’s equally interesting what you realize you keep and what you toss. Some of the things you keep say a lot about your personality and your life.

Like these.

I paid next to nothing for them, and I collected them over a period of about a week. I used to keep them in a bowl on my table for interest, and during a course I was teaching, I once traded one for a book that I coveted. I definitely think I got the better end of the deal, but the woman I made the trade with brought it up when I was in a meeting with her last fall, and she thinks she came out ahead.

Go figure.

It’s all in your personal perspective I suppose.

They are just a pile of souvenirs (that word looks so wrong without another “e” with the “i”)  I brought back from a trip 11 years ago, but they are also quite representative of me and my life.

For size context the one that Wall-E is holding is a bit bigger than a silver dollar, maybe two inches across, and some in the pile are a fair bit larger than that.

Any guesses on what they are and what they are from? (Anne, if you read this you have to stay quiet!)

Would you believe that they are scales from a fish?

It’s a fish called an Arapaima, found in the Amazon river. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arapaima) and they are very tasty 😉

The scales are used in many decorative items that the locals sell, and they have traditional uses including being purposed as nail files. I tried, it does work!

We have a couple of them at The Vancouver Aquarium here.
