74/366 - Angry Ocean

March 14, 2012 – I came up to Campbell River yesterday evening with plans to visit a salmon farm up the coast at Hardwicke Island.

Monday this area was hit with wild weather, but yesterday was calm. Unfortunately, when I woke up before the sun rose, I could hear that we probably weren’t going to be able to get out on the boat to reach the facility. This mornings winds were again up over 100km/h and the ocean was frothing with anger. We stopped in at the company head office anyway, and spent some time talking about what we had hoped to see. We thought perhaps we could visit a hatchery up in Sayward, but when they called up they found out that the power was out and some live wires were down on the site, they had enough to deal with so we agreed to come back up another time.

The rain was going sideways and was mixed with snow, and we decided to stop in at one of our own hatcheries even though we weren’t expected until tomorrow. Inland just a few kilometres we encountered full on snow and the wind was only a little weaker. The day was pretty much a bust, but we made the most of what we could get out of it before heading back to the hotel to work on other things.

Eventually I got antsy and went out for a bit of a drive to take some photos. By late afternoon, when this photo was taken, things had calmed down a lot compared to earlier, and most of the ferries were running again.

But as I am sitting in bed thinking about going to sleep, the wind sounds like it’s going to take the roof above me off, it’s picked up again and the sound brings back traumatic memories of a night at anchor in a foreign country when we thought we might lose the boat we were on. There is a constant sound, like a large jet airplane, all around me, and there is a regular banging of some door or something not far away.

I’m glad I’m on land.
