Jan 2, 2012 – I suppose in a way it’s a tradition for me, although I’m not really one much for traditions, and it’s not like I get up and say to myself “I must do this because I do it every January 1/2”. It’s more like it just happens. A bit of an antsy feeling, that I have this time, and it’s January 1/2, and I just always have this urge to sweep away the old things that have no place in my closet/drawer/cupboard/life.
So invariably, I end up tossing/recycling/donating boxes and bags of junk/papers/clothes/bedding/housewares/etc. I cleared out about three bags of clothing, tossed several bags of shredded paper garbage, tossed about 200+ CDs of backed up photos – after I did a secondary backup to a new 2TB hard drive (photos have three separate backups, one always stored separately from the computer). I let go of some books, some bedding that is not needed, a few old hats, and many more things that aren’t being used and could have a life with someone else.
And sometimes these purges take me/us on a trip down memory lane. Like when I dragged out the contents of a long unused back-of-the-bottom-closet-drawer and discovered these relics from our club days in the 80’s. Yes, we were fans of the Billy Idol era. Chains and studs and wild haircuts. Platinum blonde mohawks and razor lines cut in to the scalp. Snake rings and nothing but black in the wardrobe (OK, some things stay pretty consistent!).
Although these studded belts provided a giggle, they went out with the rest of the stuff, because even thought they remind me of what fun we had in the night clubs in the 80’s and how wild we used to dress/do our makeup/wear our hair, I just don’t have a 20 year old waist anymore 🙂
