Day 178 - Again, Funny How Plans Change

178/365 (June 27, 2011) – When we bought our condo we’d planned on 5 years, then move up, then up again, eventually to a house.

Then we bought a boat. Then we discovered how much we liked doing things like sailing in the Mediterranean, motorcycling, etc.

Then we decided that a bigger boat was more desirable than a bigger home. A bigger home just means more things to worry about, mores stuff to accumulate and store.

Nah!

When you get greedy you lose sight of what really matters. It’s not about the quantity of “stuff” it’s about the experiences and the quality. More toys isn’t better, more space doesn’t make you happier. Enjoy what you have and move forward at a pace that allows you to really enjoy things to the fullest rather than rush on to the next thing.

I think that in general we are too quick to buy something, then immediately want something bigger and better (at least we perceive the next thing to be better) when really, if we just gave things a little time to fully fit, we might realize that what we have is fabulous. Instead we spend too much time thinking what everyone else has must be better than what we have so we must move up, improve, get the more expensive, more powerful, bigger, shinier, faster, whatever, I don’t know. We just all seem to be so concerned with keeping up with what everyone else has, or what we think we are missing out on that i think we don’t fully appreciate the things we do end up with.

I love our little condo. Maybe a little more room eventually, but for now this still works, 17 years later…… I guess I just really like to explore everything that can come out of something before I move on to the next thing.

Except for bikes. Sorry, but I already know I’m gonna outgrow mine in a couple of years if not sooner. Your place always feels cozy.

and a bigger hole in the water to pour money into….. my small hole costs enough.

Bought the boat in 1998, definitely explored all of its possibilities and stretched it to its limit, so yes Hans, definitely a bigger hole, but we certainly aren’t leaping into it 😉 Lots of people get “foot-it is” immediately after (or during) a boat purchase. “Oh, if it was just a bit bigger, or a bit more powerful, or a bit faster, I would be so much happier” BAH! They have just encountered someone in another boat that makes them jealous because they go faster, or such. I want a slower, less expensive boat to operate (fuel wise) thus a switch from power to sail. And the fun comes from tweaking that extra 0.1 of a knot out of a sail trim.

And Grace, again, not all cc’s are equal. There are many 600cc bikes out there that have way more oomph than 650cc bikes. It’s not a numbers game. Take the time to explore all that your new baby can do for you before you get “cc-itis” You made a comment about the freeway, on the bike the freeway is the last place I want to be, too much traffic, not enough scenery. Anyone can go fast in a straight line, it’s more fun to explore the side roads and you don’t need to do 120 on those, although you surprised me when you were doing 75-90 in 50 and 60 zones a few times, that bike you have goes better than you give it credit for, trust me, Kirk and I were behind you trying to keep up a few times 😉

I might’ve mentioned the cc’s, but I was really after a smoother bike. My bike is vibrating at 70 and longer rides, even on backroads, are tiring. Kramer did say it would be rougher at higher speeds. Thanks to PRS training, I actually noticed all the speed signs and usually do about 5 (maybe 10) above the limit. No way I’m doing 90 in a 60 zone… 🙂

Hate to break it to you girlfriend, but I stopped counting 75+ in 50 zones after three or four times, and several times 85+ in 60 zones. Kirk and I were both surprised.

Sorry to say Grace you were going over the speed limit!

Grace Cho June 28, 2011 - 9:34 am

Ok, will check my speed. Thanks. My original comment was about a smoother ride. I’m sure my hands and arms would be grateful.

Just remember to look down at the speedo once in awhile 😉
