White fruited Rowan (Sorbus koehneana)

by The Philosophical Fish

I didn’t know what it was when I first saw it. A few weeks ago I mistakenly thought it was an early blooming cherry tree. But when I stopped to take photos for my blossom shot of the new year it turned out that what I’d thought were flowers were actually snow white berries.

The berries looked strikingly like a mountain ash, or a rowan…but my memories of those are that they are always bright orange/red. I recall my Mom telling me how much she loved having a mountain ash tree because the bright red berries always brought the cedar waxwings around.

Apparently they are not all as I knew them to be though, because it turns out that these striking trees along Keith Road in North Vancouver are a species of rowan tree after all.
