Weekend Things

by The Philosophical Fish

A little light reading, a bit of jam-making, and a bit of tidying up on the back deck. I am still limping on my knee so anything more than that was pretty much out of the question.

The book?

I recommend it for a fun little read. There are a couple of good twists to the plot that one doesn’t see coming.

The jam?

I was at Persia Foods the other day and there was a pile of BC apricots out front for a relatively inexpensive price. I bought a kilogram despite the fact that they aren’t my favourite jam-making apricots…I haven’t seen those for sale in years. But they would make a nice, small-batch, low sugar jam that would be tasty on toast in the gloomy winter days. I usually waterbacth can it after cooking, but I opted to freeze the few little jars so they’d retain their bright orange glow. Something different.

And then a little watering and tidying on the back deck. The heat returned and the plants are thirsty. A little dried branch complete with some Western Hemlock cones lay on the deck. We took our monster hemlocks out over eight years ago and while it was sad, I don’t miss the massive number of cones they’d drop in the yard. Our neighbour still has one or two and the weight of cones on them right now tells me that they are stressed and not doing well.

But they do make for a nice macro.
