I can’t seem to help myself…I passed at least a half dozen banana slugs this morning on my hike to the hatchery….and I showed restraint…..but then the black slug caught my eye.
No particular reason, to be honest I like the banana slugs better…I mean…if you can “like” a slug.
I think it was more a case of not having encountered one yet this year, now that the slugs are out in abundant numbers.
And that’s not a bad thing.
The banana slugs are at least native, these dudes are not.
The black slugs, a.k.a. Arion slugs, are non-native, originate from Europe. They’ve been around BC since the 1940’s, and are a concern for the Garry oak ecosystem because they graze on , and damage, plants like native lilies and orchids….some of which are species at risk.
