When I arrived at the hatchery this morning I stopped by the door, under the carport, and was folding up my umbrella and stuffing it into the bottle pocket on my backpack. As I straightened up, my eyes scanned across the wall and passed over what I initially thought was a funny looking three pointed pine needle caught in the stucco.
But something wasn’t quite right.
I glanced back and realized that the weird three pointed pine needle had legs.
It’s a crappy photo (so I just decolourized it), but it was a really cool insect.
I looked it up later and it’s a moth.
A morning-glory plume moth, to be precise. Properly known as Emmelina monodactyla.
Widespread and common, and I’ve probably seen them in flight and never taken note, but I’ve definitely never seen one sitting still….or have merely overlooked it completely.
