Also called the Bamboo Iris, I bought this as a little plant in a tiny 3″ pot at the UBC plant sale almost 12 years ago. I planted it in the garden, and it did well for a few years. Like…REALLY well.
Then we got a cold (for Vancouver) winter and it almost obliterated the entire..very extensive, plant and all of its rhizomes.
I dug out the tiny bit of surviving plant and put it in a pot and have protected it ever since…bringing it into the garage if the weather looks to be going below -10C for any stretch.
Last summer I divided it into two 24″ pots….and it’s looking like I may have to do the same again.
It’s a magnificent iris, the flowers smaller than a silver dollar diameter in size.
To me, they feel like a cross between an orchid and an iris.
I’m always pleased when they toss up a good crop of blossoms, as they are currently doing ❤️
