February 15, 2012 – That little symbol there made me one very happy camper today! It is stamped on a portable hard drive, one that holds my Time Machine folder.
On Monday I discovered that a database that lives on a high capacity flash drive failed on me. Information going back to the late 1990’s was in there, and suddenly it was gone. Literally thousands of files were in that database.
All gone into the ether.
I checked my desktop at home assuming I could just do a quick restore, only to realize that I’d reformatted the Time Machine on that computer in January and hadn’t plugged the flash drive into it since then.
I felt ill and just wanted to cry.
Today I was back in my office and the first thing I did was root out the second Time Machine drive that I keep at the office and started digging.
And there it was. Not perfect, since anything newer than July of 2011 was missing from it, so apparently it was sick for some time, but everything pre-July ’11 was there.
A little bit lost, but in the grand scheme of things, I can live with it.
And that’s why I tend to keep multiple backups.
