227/365 (August 15, 2011) – Yes,, it’s another random kitchen object. But have you ever stopped to think about the history of Pyrex? It was introduced in 1915! Made of borosilicate glass, first made in 1893, 22 years earlier than the birth of Pyrex. Apparently the name is meaningless, but may have evolved from the first product being a pie plate, and the manufacturer changing pie-rex to pyrex. Who knows. But the stuff certainly has staying power and it is laboratory tough.
