213/365 (August 1, 2011) – Mt. Baker is in the distance, it’s August 1st, and yes, those are piles of snow, as yet unmelted.
Summer has finally shown her face, but winter simply refuses to completely relinquish her grip on the North Shore mountains.
I wasn’t feeling well this morning, so we opted out of the day on the boat we had planned. By afternoon I felt up for something, but it was too late for boating so we went for a motorcycle ride and decided to explore a bit of the North Shore and avoid crossing any bridges. We headed up Seymour Mountain and were surprised to find so much snow still in the gullies, and even still in piles right on the sunny slopes. On the way back down Kirk suggested riding out Indian River Road to the end. Eventually that road turns into something made more for a mountain goat than a sportbike and as it doubled back on itself around some hair raising corners that dove at dizzying angles, my feet were out as pontoons! But it was a beautiful ride! We rode out to Deep Cove, and explored a few roads in Blueridge. The surprise of the day came when we were riding up Berkley and saw a rider in the distance. As we caught up she turned a corner and I realized it was a woman who had contacted me on a forum, but we had never met (I recognized the bike). We pulled around after her and said hello. It must have been startling to stop, have two riders pull up behind you, and then hear one call out “Are you Suzi-bug”? (Her online pseudonym).
Then a stop for a bottle of wine and a pork roast on the BBQ and a movie before bed.
Not what the day was supposed to be, but a nice afternoon in the end.
