217/365 (August 5, 2010) – A stark contrast to the forests of British Columbia right now. I rode my bike out to Horseshoe Bay this morning and took my camera thinking I could get a nice shot up howe Sound. Hardly, when I arrived the Sound was so hazy I couldn’t see much past a mile. But it’s not smog, it’s smoke.
There are currently more than 400 forest fires burning in BC, with over 1,250 to date since April 2010. Close to 100,000 hectares have burnt so far and the end is far from near. On the coast we typically see rainfall averages of 40mm, this July we had less than 1mm (0.6mm to be exact). Most of the rest of the province saw a bit more rain than we did (strangely), but it was still a very dry July and that is spelling another potential fire-storm.
As usual, the news in Vancouver focuses on how the fires impact the city…as in air quality alerts, while the rest of the Province worries about the more dire threat of the actual flames. And with thunderstorms in the forecast, more fires could be sparked.
Meanwhile, my little aquatic forest floats lazily above the goldfish, oblivious to everything.

The smoke in the air is giving a dramatic, fall feeling to the days. I’m glad we aren’t in the midst of fires. This photo is a perfect antidote.
