Day 69 – City of Glass

by The Philosophical Fish

69/365 (March 10, 2010) – Douglas Coupland referred to Vancouver as the City of Glass in his book by the same name. It’s a great book and provides a series of wonderful short essays on life in this city by the sea. Vancouver is a city of contradictions. It is Canadian, but Canadians are close to being the minority here. We have big city status, but are classed as one of the most livable places in the world because we don’t have many of the problems associated with big cities. While we are in Canada, the climate is milder than pretty much anywhere else in the country. It’s easy to go skiing in the morning, golfing in the afternoon, and boating in the evening….in pretty much any month you choose to do so.

I had to take my scooter in for its “check-up” today. I’ve managed to put the miles on it for the break-in period and now it just needed to visit the dealership for its first service. Seems funny since i’ve only actually put about $25 worth of fuel into it in 5 months…and yet I’ve put almost 800 km on it in that time. A far cry from the truck which would only get about 1/3 of a tank for the same value….and go about 1/10th the distance.

So off I went, in the rain and cold, apparently snow was falling in parts of the Lower Mainland..I think I saw a few flakes through my misty helmet visor. But then, to add insult to injury, the sky turned blotchy blue while I rode the bus home. I’ll pick it up this weekend….there will probably be a blizzard or something…

Oh well, that’s life in Vancouver, unpredictable, but always interesting.
