Day 63 – Ice, Ice, Baby!

63/365 (March 4, 2010) – OK, now this was really cool! We spent the day exploring the area surrounding Thunder Bay and found a conservation site. And at said location, a ice sailboat race was underway. Yes, that was cool, but the massive chunks of ice thrust up agains the shore…now that was way cooler!

Back home (Northern BC) the lakes are small by comparison. Lake Superior on the other hand is massive and doesn’t completely freeze over….but the shoreline and out a good several miles does. So that means that a good winter storm can still generate waves across the vast fetch the lake offers. And that, in turn means the ice, regardless of how far out it goes, will move shoreward. And that will cause the nearshore ice to crunch ashore and pile up.

I would love to live in a house on the shores of a place like this. In the non-frozen periods, the crashing waves would be wonderful. And I’d just love to hear the noise that ice booming ashore would generate.

Unfortunately that would mean leaving the BC coast, and that’s just not going to happen.
