What goes up….must it always come down?

by The Philosophical Fish

The recent economic roller coaster is something to behold. I am morbidly fascinated by it all and thankful for a few things.

#1. I am thankful that we paid our mortgage off last month. Although, perversely, I am annoyed with the current interest rates. I had negotiated a very good rate below the variable Prime rate, closed, variable, five years. We were intending to pay it off at the end of the term, 5 years early. Then things shifted a bit. We had been accumulating a pretty big lump of money in the bank looking ahead to Greece next year and also thinking about that new boat down the road. We both realized it was a bit stupid holding that kind of money in a low interest savings account but also don’t know enough about stocks to dive into that. So we realized there was enough to pay off the mortgage and start rebuilding the accounts after that. Seemed like a pretty smart thing to do…particularly in hindsight with what has happened in the past few weeks. The Bank of Canada has dropped the bank rate by a full percentage though…and I feel cheated somehow…how perverse is that!?!

#2. Related to #1…I am glad we didn’t dive into the stock market a few weeks ago!

#3. I am thankful that we are fully debt free at all levels (no car payments, no boat payments, credit cards and loans are all clear, line of credit is clear).

#4. I am thankful that we have a pot of money that may get put to good use when the dust settles in the stock market and we may have an opportunity to invest when things are lower than they have been for years…and the potential for growth is greater. Now I just need to learn a bit about stocks and get my toes wet..so to speak.

On the flip side of all of this…I am saddened by all the broken dreams that so many people are currently facing…how terrible for those who have lost so much.

Kind of a dark message. Well photographed, good treatment, Paige.

Excellent, great composition and processing – a sight that I wouldn’t have thought about capturing!

Seen in my contacts’ photos. (?)

Thanks.

I actually made Kirk turn the car around and go back to the alley so I could get this. I don’t know why, I just thought it would make an interesting statement in black and white. I was in a mood for some urban images. It’s too easy to cushion ourselves in false notions that the world is rosy and to forget or ignore the challenges the world faces.

Maybe something to do with the weather…I don’t know…

I can see what sort of a mood you were in. Very philosophical. The black and white imagery repesenting societies choices too perhaps…..

Or maybe just a shoddy umbrella. Forever the cynic me………
